monday the menu in cantonese, then mandarin, and with questionable english translations: a bunch of salads, ju gerk cho - zhu jiao cu (pig's feet and vinegar & soy sauce soup), han guok pai gwut - han guo pai gu (bbq'ed korean spareribs), ju yook beng - zhu rou bing (steamed pork cookie/biscuit? that is a terrible translation), jai (chinese veggies), fan ke ga lei ngau tou - fan que gali niu tou (tomato curry beef stomach), dau see pai gwut - dou sha pai gu (steamed black bean spareribs).

i don't really like the original version of "light my fire" by the doors. jim morrison's voice is so heavy, it's like he's sitting on the words. in his hands the song stomps around, flattening out the otherwise flirtatious melody and lyrics. shirley bassey's version is only a little better, even with her rich and expressive voice. i don't mind the jose feliciano cover though. his delicate guitar playing complements his slightly lilting tone. but i like stevie wonder's rendition of "light my fire" best. his version features dazzling orchestration, all the instruments are having a big party. joyous horns, a rambunctious bass, trilling flutes and strings. the verses come in repeated bursts of vibrant exultation and the song is barely able to contain the joy in his voice. i admit i'm biased; my aesthetic foundation was built on motown soul and funk. but it's stevie wonder's version of the song that changed my mind about the doors.

when the smoke alarm went off once, kristen reached up there and yanked it out of the ceiling, and then it was quiet.
